My Friend Kailasbhai

I often had the special blessing to meet my friend Kailas bhai in his room in the Sri Aurobindo International Center of Education where he would recount the most extraordinary experiences to me. Unfortunately he left too soon as he had many other stories he wanted to tell me, especially of the occult experiences of his closest friends. I have included all that I remember from brief notes taken during my visits.

There is a large Neem tree (Spiritual Atmosphere) just outside his window opposite the Ashram entrance. It was in very poor condition with many of its branches having been hacked off and numerous dead branches and stubs throughout the tree.

I asked the help of my friend Juan, a tree surgeon from Spain and now an Aurovilian, who worked with me for years caring for the trees in the Matrimandir Gardens. He also trained a group of young men who helped me care for the Service Tree during the recent cyclone that devastated a great portion, tearing off huge branches. Without their expertise the tree would have perished. I asked Juan if he would come and prune the Neem tree in front of Kailasbhai's room. He worked for two hours in the intense heat and brought back the tree's beauty and strength. In a subsequent cyclone when many other Neem trees were damaged on the Ashram street and around the Ashram, this one stood untouched.

During the pruning I brought Kailas Bhai in his wheelchair to see the pruning of the tree. He was most happy. This was my last visit with him. Here are some of the memories he shared with me.

December 29, 2007

"Nirod was having a sumptuous breakfast with Dilip Kumar Roy but each time when he returned to his room he felt a deep depression. He asked Sri Aurobindo about it and He said, ‘He is not feeding you free of cost, he is feeding your depression as well."

"There was a person with a large tumour in her stomach and Sri Aurobindo’s subtle hand was seen removing it and the person was cured."

"Paul Richard told Dilip, ‘I made a mistake. I could not understand Sri Aurobindo and Mother and now even to commit suicide I am not free."

Kailas told me that he first heard my new name on November 17, 1972, the day when the huge cyclone broke the large branch of the Service Tree. He saw me removing the branch with the help of some of the Ashram boys. He knew also that Mother had given me a blessing packet (through Parichand) to care for the Service Tree for the rest of my life and then gave me the care of the Banyan at the center of Auroville. He said that Ranganath had told him this. Then he said, "One year later Mother left on the same day."

Kailas had a keet (coconut leaf) roof put up for the children in the boarding As he knew the cyclone was coming he asked Sri Aurobindo to protect it as there as there was little money and he did not want it to be destroyed. During the cyclone of Nov. 17, 1972, not a leaf was disturbed and Kailas saw Sri Aurobindo’s symbol on the top of the roof but in his sadness he said to Sri Aurobindo (within) “Lord, you saved a small keet roof but the Service Tree lost a huge limb.”

"One child had a huge tumour and a 7” cut had to be made. There was no pain and Madhav (Pandit) said that Mother had put a force so that the children would not feel pain."

Mother would send Vishwajit in the subtle world to be with people who were dying and report to Her.’ This is an experience told to me by others as well. I was told that he did this for twenty years but the work was so exhausting that he asked Mother to finally release him from the work and she did so.

Vishwajit said to Mother, ‘Your hand lines are changing'. Mother said, ‘Yes, they are following my life.’

A girl was very ill and about to die. Mother told Nolini, ‘If the girl goes out from here to her village she will survive, here the forces are too active on her.’ The girl was twelve years old. The girl said, however, ‘What is the use of surviving outside after I have been here?’ Kailasbhai saw in a dream-vision, when informed about the girl, Sri Aurobindo bringing out black water from the sea but it kept coming back. The girl’s name was Mira.

Kailasbhai took her to Jipmer where the girl instructed him, ‘Keep Mother’s photos all around me.’ She left on December 12, the 12th month, at the age of 12. Then Kailasbhai had another dream in which he was standing before a monolith, a black stone, the Calcutta Kali. She said to him, ‘Your Mother could not save her.’ Kailasbhai asked, ‘You could have saved her?’ Then the stone turned into a rocket, then like a bird and Kailasbhai followed. Then Kali showed him a house and said ‘In this house I brought her.’
